Concerto Caledonia
October 3rd 2014
Aaron McGregor, violin
David McGuinness, square piano, virginal
Concerto Caledonia bring a feast of Scotland’s music from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. Professional soldier Tobias Hume’s virtuosity on the viol appears in company with contemporary dance tunes and early Scottish fiddle music, and we hear Scotland’s influences on English composer Henry Purcell, and also what Scottish composers took back from him. The toast of 18th century Edinburgh, fiddler William McGibbon, is celebrated in his variations on Scots tunes and his re-composing of the music of Arcangelo Corelli, and there’s a rare chance to hear the original version of Nathaniel Gow’s famous Fairy Dance, along with some of his ‘Hot Pyes’!
